Both Greg and I have been fortunate enough to live and work amongst other's who are true leaders and inspire us to be good leaders so when we heard about the Get Motivated seminar on the radio with speakers such as Laura Bush, John Elway, Rudolph Giuliani and Colin Powell we knew that these were people that we wanted to hear...we knew we would attend this seminar.
Every day each of us is faced with situations where we can make choices about life whether that's at work, at home or amongst friends. We are responsible for our actions to any situation. Most would agree that how we show up with these choices in these situations, demonstrates the people that we truly are-the leaders that we are. Today, we listened to some of the greatest leaders of our time and were reminded of these very things.
Some would say that the time spent there today was time that could have been better spent somewhere else...like my boss maybe who might possibly argue that I could have been demonstrating my own leadership abilities while working rather than sitting and listening to just another seminar. That may be true...I would argue that although some of the things said in these speeches, may have been things I had heard once before or even learned in a book or an article, seeing these people in "real life" and listening to their stories definitely gave me a sense of my own personal motivation and inspired me to get back to controlling my life. Sure there were the sales pitches for the products that they were selling, or their stories of how they became successful..but there were also little bits here and little bits there that captured my attention and reminded me of the ME that I would like to be. Here are some of the things that stuck with me from the seminar:
Robert Schuller-
*Never look at what you have lost, look at what you have left
*Take the word impossible out of your life
Laura Bush-
*I know who I am
Colin Powell-
*It doesn't matter where you start, it matters where you end up-finish
*The role of a leader is to get people to follow you, give them a sense of purpose so that they can see how their contribution can make the organization succeed.
*You must believe in the purpose
*A person who cannot see something going wrong and fix it, cannot be a leader
*The essence of a good leadership in an organization is trust
*Good leaders face reality
Tamara Lowe-
*Your past does not define you
*Nothing is worse than worry but excuses
Terry Bradshaw-
*You own the deed for your happiness-act on it
Zig Zigler-
*Gratitude is the healthiest of all human emotions
*Homecourt advantage: meaning if you have a stable and loving home atmosphere everything else falls easier into place
Rudy Gulliani-
*To be a leader, you have to #1 have strong beliefs #2 be an optimist #3 have courage #4 prepare #5 be able to communicate
*People follow hope and dreams and people who are solving problems
*If you can recognize that there is a problem-recognize ways to also solve the problem
*If you failed, go back and figure out why you failed then go back and try again
*Courage is managing fear
*Determine your weaknesses and find people and ways to help balance those
*Care about the people that work with and for you
All in all it was a good day with many things to ponder afterwards...I have been motivated!
